Breaking the Middleman Trap: How India’s Banana Farmers Are Earning More Than Ever

India is the world’s largest producer of bananas, but for most farmers, this dominance doesn’t translate into better income. Despite cultivating high-quality crops, they struggle to secure fair prices due to their dependence on intermediaries who dictate market rates and delay payments.

Maharashtra, the second largest banana producing state, is home to skilled farmers growing premium G9 bananas—varieties in high demand both in India and internationally. Yet, their earnings remain unstable. Without a structured market approach, they rely on traders who claim a large portion of profits. Payments are delayed—sometimes for months—and price fluctuations can cause rates to drop by as much as 50%, leaving farmers with unsustainable margins

GreenSupply’s Solution: Cut Out the Middlemen

Founded in 2019, GreenSupply is transforming the banana supply chain by connecting farmers directly to buyers. This approach ensures better pricing, faster payments, and greater predictability.

In Maharashtra’s Jalgaon and Raver districts, GreenSupply is partnering with 3,300 farmers to build an efficient, farmer-first model.

Here’s how it works:

  • Standardized Grading System: Farmers classify produce into four grades (A, AB, BC, and D) based on quality, ensuring fair pricing for every banana.
  • Demand-Driven Harvesting: Instead of selling whatever is available, farmers now align their harvests with real-time market demand, preventing oversupply-driven price drops.
  • Same-Day Payments: The company introduced instant payments, addressing one of the biggest pain points for farmers—long waiting periods that disrupt cash flow.
  • Regional Collection Centers: These hubs streamline post-harvest logistics, quality checks, and distribution, creating a reliable and efficient supply chain.

The impact? Farmer earnings increased by 25%, and price volatility was reduced, making banana farming more sustainable.

Scaling Success

With Maharashtra’s model proving successful, GreenSupply is now expanding to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, regions where farmers face even greater challenges. Unlike Maharashtra’s G9 bananas, these states struggle with low-quality planting materials, resulting in inconsistent yields and poor market acceptance.

To tackle these issues, GreenSupply has launched a five-phase expansion plan in districts like Bahraich and Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh) and Naugachia, Purnea, and Katihar (Bihar):

  1. Introducing G9 Banana Saplings – Farmers will receive high-yield, disease-resistant planting material to improve quality and profitability.
  2. Onboarding 1,000 Farmers – Creating direct market linkages and integrating them into an organized supply chain.
  3. Developing Regional Collection Centers – Setting up hubs to support 250 farmers each, ensuring seamless aggregation and transportation.
  4. Providing Expert Advisory – Agronomists will train farmers in disease prevention, productivity enhancement, and post-harvest best practices.
  5. Building a Demand-Aligned Supply Chain – Farmers will be trained to harvest strategically, reducing price crashes and ensuring better returns.

A Boost from Innovators for Bharat

This expansion is being powered by Villgro and SBI Foundation under the Innovators for Bharat Program, providing GreenSupply with the backing needed to scale its impact. Over the next three years, the company aims to support 10,000 farmers in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, helping them transition from uncertain incomes to structured, profitable banana farming.

GreenSupply’s farmer-first approach is proving that with the right support, India’s banana farmers can break free from middlemen, stabilize their earnings, and build a more prosperous future.
